OUR SUSTAINABLE PROMISE
OUR SUSTAINABLE PROMISE
Our mission is to provide high-quality, exquisitely designed, sustainable swimwear that empowers our customers to feel confident in their own skin, and connected to the planet. We strive to minimise our environmental impact by considering our carbon footprint throughout our supply chain. Is this holistic approach to sustainability what allows us to set foundational principles we can follow from the beginning.
-
We work exclusively with brands that consider sustainability as a core principle in their production. All our brands strive to innovate and use alternative materials that do not sacrifice the quality of the garment, and protect the environment in the process. They are committed to supporting a circular economy model.
Among the practices our brands follow you’ll find:
EKO®FIBERS and OEKO-TEX class 1 certified fabrics being used in the manufacturing process of the different pieces
The use of recycled polyamide and polyester from different sources like plastic bottles, old fishing nets and carpets
Reduced water consumption through digital printing and, in the case of Ancora products, 0% water printing which means they do not use a single drop of water to create their prints.
-
92 million tonnes of textile waste is produced every year, that is 92 billion kilograms of textile waste produced every, single, year.
In an effort to fight overstocking we work with made-to-order brands that require a leadtime of over three months. This means we purposefully create small collections with limited quantity orders which ensures that our partners can create and deliver their pieces in an ethical and environmentally responsible way.
-
Attention to detail is key
The brands we work with design pieces meant to last a lifetime, not a season. They are timeless designs that transcend temporary trends and fads, and instead embody versatility and quality production. All the pieces are made with durable fabrics and finishes, creating high quality products that ensure a longer life cycle and discourage fast fashion design and consumption.
-
When calculating the prices for the products sold in our platform we consider the cost of production, the value of the product, and the fair compensation of everyone involved in the manufacturing process. The brands we work with ensure sustainable materials and ethical labor practices which means the final cost of their products will be higher than that of mass produced, fast fashion brands.
We do not charge customers for unnecessary branding and marketing costs, we design everything in house and rely on our brands to help us promote their products. All this in an effort to ensure customers pay a reasonable price for high-quality pieces - and that workers in the supply chain receive fair compensation for their work. We aim to create a transparent and equitable pricing structure, one that benefits all stakeholders, including consumers, manufacturers, and the environment.
-
All our designers formally employ their workers and ensure safe working conditions, fair working hours and a just and dignified wage that respects the rights of workers to receive just compensation for their labor.
They support local businesses and freelancers by partnering with them to generate jobs and contribute to regional economic growth. All the brands are committed to gender equality in their hiring practices.
-
Working with ethical and sustainable brands is only one part our our sustainability promise. At Mel do Mar we want to go a step further in our compromise towards generating a positive impact on the world.
Every February, our anniversary month, we will choose a charity alongside our social media community and donate 30% of the month’s net profit sales from our website to them. 2023 is our first year in business and we want to set a precedent from the start of our journey. In the coming years, as we keep growing, we hope to be able to build on this initiative and increase the positive impact your purchase at Mel do Mar has.
